Whenever a security alert comes from Google, they will tell you exactly what happened in your mail inbox. The reason they tell you such is just for you to know what happened. And if you are not aware of such activity, you have to act to prevent bad guys from tampering with your account.
Simply ignore the mail if you are the one that carried out such activity on your account.

When do Google send security alert?
There are so many occasions in which you will receive such email account from Google. I’ll tell you when you get such email and what to do about it. Google is doing everything possible to protect your account. That is why Google always update their security database.
These are occasions which in which they will send you a security alert.
- When a new Gmail account links to your own account.
- You get security alert when you grant access to any app.
- When you sign in to your account on a new device.
These and more warrants Google to send you a security email. Let’s treat them one after the other.
When a new Gmail account links to your own account
This is simply when another Gmail account uses your current account as a recovery email.
Your account may be used by you or a friend to secure a second Gmail account, google will notify you and also give you a link to view the activities.
When your account is linked to another one, your account is used as security to that new account. It means that the other account can be retrieved with your Gmail account. In addition, you will always get security alert on any irregular activity that goes on in the account.

What do you do?
Once you see such security alert email, and you are not the one that did such thing, simply click the “Check activity” link which Google sends to you so you will review the activities on your account.
Confirm the security alert by choosing any of the options. Click “No, secure account” if you were not the one. Click “Yes, it was me” if you were the one that performed such activity. To be on the safer side, you need to remove your Gmail account from other devices using your own device. Scroll down to the subheading “steps to take against it” to see how to remove your Gmail account from all other devices.

When you grant access to your account to any app
There are some applications which requires access your Google account before you can access their services. Once you sign in, you grant them permission to your account to an extent.

They do such in other to get required information from you and for them to reach you easily. However, you only grant limited access.

What you need to do
If you want to remove such them such access, go to your security settings, scroll down and select manage third-party access.

You will see a list of all the platforms and apps which have access to your Google account. Tap any of them you want.

Click “remove access”. This will automatically remove the access to your account.

Note: When I say, they have access to your account it does not mean that they access your account via your password. Google keeps all your personal details safe.
Secondly, among all the listed platforms, Google apps has the full access. Do not remove their access or you will stop receiving maximum protection on your Google account.

when you sign in to your account on a new device.
This is simply when you or any other person uses a different device, either phone or computer to attempt or successfully login to your account.
Here, so many things go on between the device and Google. They would like to verify if you are actually the one signing in with the new device. You receive prompts asking you to provide some security information such as phone number, recovery email or even a security code.
Such attempt maybe blocked by Google, immediately you are unable to confirm those information. You can’t use that device to login unless you provide those information. You will receive critical security alert immediately.

Once you see such email in your inbox, review the activities if you are not the one that attempted to or you can simply ignore it if you did.

Steps to take against it
While reviewing your account activities, they will ask you to confirm whether you are the one or not. That solves the problem.
If you find critical or any illegal activity on your account, you need to login and change your password and make it strong. You may say you have a strong password but you need to learn how to build a stronger password.
Furthermore, you need to remove your Gmail account from other devices.

What happens if I ignore Google critical security alert?
The answer is, it depends. I’ve always given this answer to some questions I answer in my articles. Let me explain.
If you receive a security mail alert from Google and the activities they want you to review were performed by you, then, you don’t have anything to worry about.
On the other hand, if you didn’t carry out such activities on your account, bear it in mind that somebody somewhere is managing your account for you and you need to act as fast as possible.
